Grants can be awarded to churches and chapels in Shropshire if they are at least 100 years old and in regular use as a place for Christian worship. We emphasis that we help places of worship of all denominations.  If you consider that you have an historic church or chapel because of its age or special architectural features we will be glad to receive and consider a grant application.

The Trust has now completed 19 years of work and has now given 178 grants to some 150 churches, worth almost £375,000.  The average grant in 2010 was over £4,200, over three times the average grant awarded at the turn of the century.  Rarely is the SHCT the only grant provider, churches having to search diligently for other sources to raise substantial sums, with the hope that English Heritage will come to their rescue.

The work that our churches most often need is repair to the fabric: stone, brick, slate and wood.  With our unforgiving wet climate, leaking roofs, defective gutters, downpipes and drains feature more than anything.  Most problems require the use of scaffolding to facilitate both inspection and repair work which adds to the expense.  Our advice is to seek help early from the Trust to prevent small problems becoming big ones.

How to Apply for a Grant

  • As soon as you have decided what work needs to be done, and you have obtained estimates, complete and submit an application form.  We cannot consider making a grant without a detailed account of what is needed to be done and why.

  • Please include details of what funds are already available and how the money has been raised.

  • The Trust can assist with maintenance or repair only if an historic church or chapel building is in regular use.  We cannot assist with church halls, extensions to church buildings or the provision of toilet or catering facilities within a church building.

  • Disability access can be considered only when ancient fabric is involved.

National Churches Trust

The National Churches Trust (NCT) is reviewing its operations and is keen to work with county trusts in order to reduce the burden of grant application.  Several counties are involved in a pilot scheme whereby grant applicants will be automatically be asked if they wish their applications to be passed on to the NCT.  This will spare churches and chapels having to complete two forms  and should speed up the response time.  If universally adopted this procedure will not only benefit churches and chapels but also assist the NCT in its decision-making since it uses the county trusts' knowledge of individual buildings.
